If there is an accident on the water and you need to provide first aid to an injured person, the main rule is not to lose time, pull yourself together and perform the following actions.
Provide assistance after extracting the victim from the water:
- Put the victim on his back and check the pulse and the reaction of the pupils to the light;
1.If there is no pulse and no independent breathing, begin resuscitation immediately:
Place an object (clothing, blanket) under the victim’s shoulders so that his head is somewhat tilted back. The mouth of the victim should be covered with a handkerchief. The caregiver presses his mouth tightly against the victim’s mouth and blows air from his lungs into his airways. The victim’s nose should be obstructed while the air is being blown in. After this artificial “inhalation,” the chest collapses to its original volume, exhaling. Blowing air into the victim’s lungs should be repeated approximately 16-18 times per minute.
If the heart beats stop, indirect heart massage is performed. Stand on the left side of the victim and with some effort press the heart area with the hands, put one on the other, 50-60 times a minute. The heart massage should be combined with artificial respiration. After 4-5 pressings on the heart, one airway is blown into the lung.
When the pulse and breathing appear it is necessary to wipe the victim with a dry towel, cover him with something warm, call an ambulance.
Remember! When drowning, resuscitation is given within 30-40 minutes, even if there are no signs of its effectiveness
- If there is a pulse and breathing:
- Turn the victim onto his stomach;
- throw him over his hip (the back of a chair, a thick tree branch, etc.);
- clean his mouth: put two fingers in his mouth as deeply as possible and press on the root of his tongue. If thereafter vomiting and coughing – remove water from the lungs and stomach, for which for the next 5-10 minutes periodically press on the root of the tongue until the water ceases to be released, while patting the back with the hands, and several times squeeze the sides of the chest while exhaling;
- after removing the water, lay the victim on his or her side or stomach;
- call an ambulance;
- keep the victim warm;
- observe the victim, as at any moment cardiac arrest may occur and resuscitation may be required.
We will teach you all these actions in our course “First Aid for Drowning” and show you on examples and dummies how to behave correctly in such a situation.
